Trending @Accenture; Leaving for higher studies not a job switch - HR is asking for a 2 months buyout. Advice needed.
Hey everyone,
I’ve officially resigned (LWD - 20th July) and requested a one month notice period instead of the standard three months, as my master’s program begins in August. I’ll likely need to fly out either in the last week of July or the first week of August to complete some admission formalities.
Initially, I was unsure about going due to the global job market, but I eventually decided that the worst case scenario would be not landing a job and having to return and I’m okay with that. I chose to go ahead to gain the experience of living abroad.
Now, HR is telling me I’ll need to pay for the remaining two months, which I find quite unfair. Here are a few reasons why I believe this two month buyout demand is unreasonable:
- I’m not a critical resource - my project is ending this week, after which I will be moved to the bench.
- I’m leaving for higher education, not switching jobs - there’s no income involved during this transition, so it’s not a profitable move for me.
How should I approach this situation? I’m honestly quite disappointed and frustrated.
You serve 3 months , 2 months from abroad just for name sake filling the timesheets through mobile and log out ; after 3 months you just ask one of your family members to drop your laptop and ID card, assets If any at the office and it should be fine

This would become a legal issue as the US is very strict about working on an F1 Visa. I wouldn't want to get deported because of Accenture being stubborn on serving NP 🥲

You'll have to buyout. Unfortunately, that's the process. I've never seen anyone leave early without a buyout, unless your manager and HR have a discussion and allow you to release early due to any project budget constraints.

I don't think the project can push you to bench if you have already put papers. Accenture will not allow this based on experiences I have heard from others.
Since your project is ending, the best option here is to let you go because it is going to benefit you, your project billing and Accenture.
Maybe HR got the impression that you have no other option to take and would end with talking the buyout. Maybe this would benefit the HR? God knows!
Try reaching out to other leads or senior HRs and see if they can help.

Yeah this is what I've done. I've looped the DU Lead and stuff in emails, and will see what happens. My HR has been super unresponsive since last Wednesday lol so I need to follow up faster

If you have already given resignation while you were on project which is going to end soon....then your project manager will negotiate your buyout to HR...as thi happened with one my colleague.....He was released within 1 month when he put on papers.....as manager told since you have given resignation and your project in which you have given resignation on...would be responsible to hold you till you NP gets completed...but we can not hold you because there is no more work and project is going to end ....so they by themselves have given this buyout option for early release....so all the best

Thankyou for your response, I hope something like this only happens in my case as well

Create a strong email and loop every senior person in your circle along with the hr and detail out everything you can. They'll help you out. I am myself on notice with LWD being 21st July. I had tried everything to get an early release but HR denied everything. She plainly said that the only reason in Accenture when you can get an early release is higher studies. You may share your official letter over the email requiring you to leave early and they'll surely help you out

OMG really?! I specifically stated the higher education reason to my HR and she said whatever happens you have to do a buyout. As others suggested I will escalate it to the DU Lead

You would require relieving letter for your future.better to pay and leave if hr and du lead do not agree. Talk to DU lead once .Provide them with your admission details and fees details as proof. Hr would allow if DU lead agrees. If they allow you everyone would come up with same reason. Which hr may not allow ... Are you level 12?

Nope, level 11. Have been in Accenture for 4 years now
Yeah I'm trying to do that, my HR is not being responsive at all since last Wednesday though lol

Just send mail to HR and Manager that, you won't be able to serve notice period because your classes are starting from so and so that. If they can't release by that date, you will not have any other option than being absent.
If you show that you don't care about relieving letters, they can't hold you or ask for buy out amount

Gotcha, I am still trying to negotiate with them as I'm going for educational purposes and not a job switch which means I'm not monetising the remaining 2 months. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

You can compensate your earned leaves to final negotiations
