Kafka experience
Im a backend engineer around a decade. Never had hands on with Kafka. What am I missing?

Unless you're good with other queuing (or pubsub) techniques/architecture like SNS+SQS, it'll tough for you to justify your position as a mid level backend developer.
Once at SDE-2 level Kafka is the bread and butter. Once you get good at it, it'll open up a whole different world for backend engineering. Think Flink, Pinot etc for features.
If you're not using Kafka in prod, learn the fundamentals of pub sub and why you even need Kafka somewhere. Apply whenever opportunity presents.
You'll never be unemployed if you're good at it.
