Job Hunting After Layoff: How Do I Break Through High Competition?
I was impacted by an org change last month, and since then I’ve been actively job hunting.
I’ve applied to ~30–40 roles so far, mostly prioritizing well-known companies which also means I’m often competing with 100+ applicants per role.
I recently got 2 interview opportunities: One went up to the 5th round but ended in a rejection Another is still in early stages
I’m starting to feel a bit stuck and unsure about my approach. Part of me wonders if focusing only on popular companies is limiting my chances, and the competition feels overwhelming.
For those who’ve been in a similar situation or are on the hiring side:
What actually improves the odds of landing a strong role in a good company? Or even chances of recruiter seeing my resume
Should I broaden my target companies or double down on fewer, high-quality applications?
Any practical tips to stand out when applicant volume is so high?
I’m aiming for a role with good growth, meaningful work, and a reasonable package but right now it feels uncertain.
Would really appreciate any honest feedback, strategies, or even tough advice 🙏

The challenge is that after struggling through my early roles, this was the first job that truly felt right. It had a great work-life balance, and now it’s been tough trying to find something similar again.
