
I've stopped hiring Tier 1 grads
Here’s a hiring practice that might surprise people: I don’t hire freshers from Tier 1 institutions. Instead, I actively look for talent from Tier 2 colleges and liberal arts backgrounds.
It’s not some bold “break the system” statement; It’s just based on what I’ve seen firsthand. People from these backgrounds come in with a hunger you can’t teach. They don’t expect things handed to them. They’re here to prove themselves, to learn, and to show what they can do with the opportunity they’ve been given. There’s something refreshing about working with someone who’s genuinely excited to learn the ropes, who doesn’t assume they’ve got it all figured out just because of a fancy degree.
What I’ve noticed is that they bring a different approach to solving problems. They’re not looking for shortcuts; they’re not glossing over the basics. They’re thoughtful, eager, and often come up with solutions that come from out-of-the-box thinking rather than textbook knowledge. They’re open to feedback, willing to iterate, and not too proud to ask questions—and that, in my experience, is worth its weight in gold.
Here’s the thing, I have the budget that a Tier 1 grad would ask for, and I’d much rather invest it in someone from a Tier 2 college or a liberal arts background. Paying them what they’re truly worth, not just “entry-level” peanuts, does something powerful. It’s not just about the money; it’s about making people feel valued right from day one. When they see they’re genuinely appreciated, that we’re invested in their growth, they show up with a sense of ownership and commitment that’s hard to teach.
There’s something about giving people that respect from the start. It sends a message that they belong, that they’re trusted, that we’re counting on them. And that trust? It translates into how they handle challenges, how they step up when things get tough, and how they genuinely care about the work they’re doing. I’d take that dedication, that loyalty, and that drive over a big-name degree any day. Always, always make people feel valued - it does wonders in how they take ownership and show up for the team 🧡

Just one thing, whatever u have written is true for everyone who has seen struggles, don't take things/work for granted, care about the work, and importantly are humble.. irrespective of the tier of the college they belongs to..

Couldn't agree more. I have the budget and the pressure to hire from T1. I still don't. There is a etter pool available from the other side. T1 grads in the tech world are like the upsc babus of government world.
