I'm currently on bench since 70days, they sent me an email saying I need to take up a project within 45 days or i'll be laid off. Now the thing is if I put in resignation will this period get set to 90 days or will they just come to me the very next day and give early release. I just want to buy more time till I get an offer from outside.
Any suggestions?

90 days notice period will be there, if you get a job early exit eill be agreed easily

But what about the 45 day deadline letter from HR, that will become null and void?

It's just tactics from them dor you to either find work or resign, still you can clearly talk to HR and clarify them, say you are resigning and they'll let you know everything.
