Ass kissing is the better option. Many people assume promotions are career growth are based on talent and skill. That's true only for the first 5 years on experience. After that, its merely joining a cartel. If your manager gets promoted, gets better projects assigned to him, you get a share of the pie. your manager gets better projects assigned to him, if his manager gets better project s assigned to him, so on and so forth.
