Is the onsite dream officially dead for us?

Growing up, every older cousin in tech seemed to spend a few years in the US or London. It was the ultimate milestone. You grind for a few years, get that visa sponsored, and suddenly your Instagram is full of weekend trips to the Grand Canyon.

I really want to know if anyone actually still gets sent onsite these days. I joined my current org a little over four years ago because the hiring pitch heavily implied global exposure. Fast forward to mid 2026, and the closest I have gotten to Europe is adjusting my sleep schedule for client calls in Munich.

Every time a project actually needs someone on the ground, leadership just hires a local contractor there. Even the senior managers here are fighting for scraps when it comes to short term business visas.

It feels like the golden era of getting shipped off to a foreign branch is permanently over. Now they just want us to handle the offshore delivery while paying offshore wages I am spending my Sunday updating my resume because waiting around for an international transfer feels like a massive waste of time.

I'd say 5 years ago. Till 2019 they were handing these out like candies

Yeah, maybe the true golden era ended back then. I guess I was just hoping to catch the tail end of it!

Next step is to apply directly to international roles first remote then decide on moving on self sponsorship. Visa sponsorship is soon going to be a history.

How does this work? Can you elaborate a bit on this?

There are plenty of remote location offering website available. I have seen many people in my connection going via remote work route to internal. They always make sure to first spend 8-10 month on those jobs making connections and calculating all risk factors. Currently Malaysia, Thailand, Germany, Japan are good for IT sector.

I know people who joined WITCH companies in 2012/13 and now enjoying their life in Europe, US and nordic countries. And now a lot of folks who went to pursue MS are coming back to India due to lack of jobs

I think it's matter of luck when I first joined it back in 2013 they took bunch of people from training room and put them in support and testing roles. Come 2016 40% of those buggers were onsite and yaha me as a "developer" gand marwaraha tha.
Then I know a guy from college he joined infosys was there for 10 years while my salary grew from 3.25 to 60 lpa he was still stuck at 12.5 and what do you know there years back he shifted Switzerland abhi uski biwi instagram pe hagti rethi hai living the best life. Dekh Bhai kismat ki baat hai. Either you get paid well in India or you sacrifice that boot lick to go onsite choice is yours.
