Is switching from govt job to it advisable?

Hey friends, I am working in a govt org(power generation)with 14 yoe and on a package of 28 lpa. I know in comparison to the IT sector my salary is very low. My background is B.E.(cse) 2010 passout. I see my relatives earning like 60-70 lpa and all in less experience than me. Sometimes I regret my decision of joining the govt department and not choosing the IT sector at the start of my career.

Now when I look for options to increase my income, I can't find many options. Recently I came across a software development course from the scalar academy which focuses on data structures and system design with java programming. I was searching for some freelancing options but I can't finalize one. As per the scalar academy, one can get very high packages after completion of the course. Like 50-60 lpa.

  1. My question is that as I come from a non it background so despite having an experience of 14 yoe, I think I will be treated a freshers by the companies. Am I right in this assumption? So if the companies consider me as fresher, I will certainly not be getting the packages as promised by the academy. What's you guys' take on this?

  2. If I am to continue with my current job, What freelancing options are best for me and what course should I do primarily for freelancing purpose?

Sir, There are couple of points that I want to say here:-

  1. Scalar academy is just like the coaching institute. So, don't opt for it unless you have researched it properly, you may feel like you got scammed. Scalar academy works by playing with emotions, so 50-70 LPA is not a child's play. I would never pay 2-3 L for scalar course.

  2. Currently, the IT job market is not so good. It may pay well but you can lose job anytime irrespective of your skills and achievements.

  3. Only few companies give such high packages to top tier college or high experienced folks. You can decide yourself how much value you can add to that company.

  4. You may not get time for yourself and then you will complain that your friends at gov job is spending summer/winter holidays with their family and you are grinding your ass(with all due respect) to complete your deadline

There are many more points but at the end of the day it is your decision.

Never in dream I would say
Because if it will pay you 30 it will take the work of 60 and you will be drained like hell here and that also in the scenario when you are talented enough to acquire such high paying job else the life will be hell with less salary.

Don't come bro. 60-70 lakhs is just a small percent of the IT population package. And don't fall for fancy ads of scalar academy or FAANG influencers course. Just remember one thing, if you are closing the laptop on Friday and excited about Saturday and not Anxious about Monday don't leave that job

I think you have the perfect spot to do freelancing. Learn and make your projects and start with small projects. Give up on the govt job only and only when you are sure that you love software development a lot.

Can you suggest the most in demand technology for freelancing?

Not generalising corruption, but in your sector is salary the only source of income for other employees? Are the employees corrupt in your office? You must be a corruption free employee but what about others, they earn more than 28LPA?

Now, my suggestion to your query: Don't quit the current job. Meanwhile learning is not a bad thing. Learn from Scaler or free resources if you can dedicate 2-3 hrs 5 days a week(maybe some extra time on a weekend). And, do some freelancing if you find. 2-3 years down the line, observe if you like this lifestyle and able to make good money. Then, only decide on leaving your current government job.

At least in my case it is zero extra money. And that I am saying anonymously so you should believe that.
