Is it worthwhile, Going to the US, Europe as an SDE

Hi Grapevine, Just curious to know your thoughts of going to the US/EU as an SDE during the early age of your career. Maybe not now but within 1 year. Pure motivation is money and will definitely come back to India in a couple of years .

Usa definitely yes. But no direct easy path, education (stem degree is the only way).

Europe, I’ve mixed feelings, pay isn’t that great, you’ll comfortably make that much in india, but if you want better quality of life and want to explore new places then yes.

I don’t think European engineers have a better lifestyle than India. Most engineers in places like Germany and France can hardly even afford to rent a 3bhk apartment in major cities, let alone save and build wealth.

I felt very lonely. Initially it was good exploring all the places, clean roads, fresh city but soon it all disappeared. Also, you have to do work yourself like cleaning, cooking etc. which used to consume all the free time.

Are you currently in the US/EU?

Without going into MS, what are the other ways to get into US.

  1. Get into MNCs in India which will transfer you to US in 1-2 years.

This is a great route too. But in the current environment not that great because big techs have frozen hiring and transfers

I think US is a definite yes. If you get the opportunity - feel it’s worthwhile to make the move for the pay and experience

If money, no point going to eu to get equivalent salary with higher cost of living.

Some of my friends in Germany are working as SDE-2/Senior Software Engineer and their annual pay is in the dismal range of €70-80k which is very low if you consider their high taxes of 40+%. If you want to build wealth stay away from Europe. You would build it way faster in India. The next best option is the US.
