Is it possible for me to switch to a proper dev role?

I'm currently working in Oracle support. I just saw a post where someone mentioned that it's completely impossible to get into a dev role if your background is in support. If it's true then I might have to take some drastic measure that I was planning for later once I got a proper dev job.
