Since grapevine is a tech-heavy platform, many might suggest that it is not worth it.

In most roles outside tech, it is still very relevant.

PS: I'm a non IIT-IIM and an exceptional performer throughout my career. "Where their struggles start, my dreams end" :)

I'll tell you an inside secret why people prefer folks from IIT/IIM.

It's because of their perspective, risk taking ability and aspirations. People from tier 1 clg generally aspire to become big and they are intrinsically motivated to do whatever it takes to achieve things.

They have a larger perspective towards life since they are exposed to a lot of things in college.

And that's it. I'm not saying that all IIT/IIM folks have this, or other folks don't have it. It's just that IIT/IIM graduates have worked hard to get there and already proven that they have that fire.

I'm from IIT-IIM. I can confirm this answer is absolute bullshit.

There is no inside secret like that.

Everyone who doesn't have it will say it really doesn't matter. Those who have it will know how much easier it made their life seem compared to others.

100% worth it. My spouse does tech leadership hiring and CEOs invariably prefer candidates from "brand" colleges, even when these candidates have been in the industry for 15+ years and have done a lot. Best case scenario is brand colleges + industry-specific brand companies.

Definitely a practice followed at all FAANG companies too. Active filtering for top colleges

GigglyLlama
GigglyLlama

Yes, it definitely helps.

Let me give you an example.

A few years back I read this report, 1.4 Cr applicants for 90,000 peon jobs in Railways. Includes thousands of PhDs, etc.

What you must infer from this is - there are a lot of candidates for any profile. The sheer number of applications any opening would receive is so overwhelming for any HR responsible for talent acquisition or the hiring/line manager. They're going to apply shortcuts or heuristics.

Companies are not obliged to go through 21,000 resumes for an opening. A candidate might feel, oh wish the world was fair, every candidate should get a fair shot. To go through so many CVs that a company receives, the company would need to hire an army of HRs, which franly doesn't make sense.

They can't go too wrong if simply apply the filter of top colleges. Education serves a signalling function, in country of hordes and legions of candidates. Way too much noise, too little signal.

The IIM tag is quite overrated if you aren't in traditional sunset industries such as Investment Banking or Strategy consulting. If you are someone in tech, it almost doesn't help at all or can be even detrimental because of the opportunity cost.

TwirlyQuokka
TwirlyQuokka

Why did you refer IB and consulting as sunset industries? Just curious.

FloatingDumpling

There aren't that many front end IB opportunities in India, for instance there was one bulge bracket IB role and a handful of small boutique IB analyst roles for my whole batch at an IIM. The boutique firms didn't even pay well to command 14 hour workdays, 7 days a week lifestyle. Even for entry level analyst roles this was the size of the opportunity in India.
Consulting doesn't pay well anymore or isn't as lucrative as tech.

It helps upto an extent.

But in long run, it's game of turtle and rabbit.

But yes, iit iim wala degree ka kha k mota ho jaega...baki janta ko ghisna padega wha pahuchne k lie

There is no doubt that people on an average from premier IITs or IIMs are a cut above the average from the rest. Regarding the tag, people don't get that easily. It's just a reflection of their natural IQ and hardwork at some point in time. IQ is not necessarily nurtured, a part of it is natural. There is a clear difference in speed at which high iq people work. So, it's only natural that they would fare well in the job market if they put in sufficient hours of work.

Obsession with IITs is overhyped

I can say that the obsession with IITs is definitely overhyped. Don't get me wrong, IITs are great institutions with some of the brightest minds, but the way they are glorified is just too much.

First of all, the pressure on students to...
