Is holding a stock for long time the right thing to do?

Scenario 1 -

I bought shares of Cian Agro at a price of ₹1.4k and kept holding. I got 2.5x returns but didn't sell and now I'm in loss.

Scenario 2 -

I have Oracle shares at price of $130 and it peaked at $345, but didn't sell. Now, it is trading below $200.

Should I have booked profits and bought again at lower price, or holding for long term is the key?

Thanks.

Yes. Absolutely.

Hold onto good companies that are doing valuable things for as long as you can

One could imagine to garner attention from the app founder himself 🤯. Hello Micheal 👋

There've been instances where I could've booked good profit, but I guess I don't know what to do with the money after I sell. Probably that's why, I don't book profit.

Take crypto for example. I could've sold at the peak few weeks ago, but didn't. Look at BTC now 🥲

Bro what i do is that when i see peak growth in my terms i do sell the half stocks or the amount of stocks that i have made profit from it

Got it. You take the principal out.

If that is the case, then how would one make multibagger returns.. I have few stocks where I hold them with 200-300% profit and one company with 5x returns... I keep on adding even now when I can. If you believe in business and management, hold them at least for a decade to gain something out of the box.

Point. But how can one hold for a decade?

There are events in life where one buys a new home/plot, gets married, etc which are big events and demands heavy cash inflow.

In such cases, one may not be able to hold most investments, if not all, for a decade.

How would you know when to sell when stock analysis is not your full time job.

Set up a systemic sell plan

At every 10% price increase, sell 10% This way you won't get FOMO if it falls, and yet you've taken some profit out

What about taxes? For many people, doing such things and having gain can cause them to bump into the extra surcharge tier.

Depends on the quality of stocks … hindalco, SBI etc yes, Adani green …no

Tbh, sometimes I feel like stupid for not booking profits at the right time. But how does one know what is the right time to sell and buy?

Anything above 15-20% profit in stocks is a good enough time to sell. 50-100% profit should definitely be sold.
