Investing in a personal laptop, apart from work laptop

Hi folks,

I wanted to gather views on investing in a personal laptop, even after owning a decent office laptop (will most probably purchase something cheaper, if any).

Could be it for any reason from binge watching to creating personal projects.

What would be your suggestion, will it help in isolating boundaries or is it just a redundant purchase.

Invest in one.
Don't, it's redundant.

Better, invest in a personal desktop!

I have seen a few of my friends prefer that, though personally feel it's being an operational hazard, while traveling etc.

Maybe wait a little if you can. I'm also waiting. They tied up with ASUS recently. Then there is a possibility, unless that bullshit electronics import ban comes into play.

I don't think a poll is going to help you make a decision. You have to decide for yourself considering your requirements.

  1. Most important, If your company has monitoring software on then it becomes a no brainer to own a personal system because even for limited usage like mails, Netflix etc you should maintain privacy.
  2. If there is no monitoring software then understand whether the system is comfortable for your tasks/personal projects. If not then go for it. If you are comfortable with the system and not planning to leave the company anytime soon then I don't think it matters that much to buy a system as its better to buy the latest tech when you actually need it.
Just make sure to deep clean your system when returning your company laptop if you do use it for personal stuff.

How to check if such software is installed on my work laptop?

You should check in the programs file folder, and see what all is installed. If you’re on a mac, then search in library.

Yeah go get one, don’t use your work laptop for personal stuff, if it’s IT configured then 💁🏼‍♂️

And if your next job doesn’t give you a proper laptop you can use your personal one, I use my personal laptop for work too.

In my previous company my manager was using his personal MacBook, he and the others in my team never touched the thinkpad the office gave.

Can't you buy the work laptop when you're about to leave the company?

@Paperbackdreams Dunno how that works but I so didn’t want to own the thinkpad they gave me, if they give you a fresh new one, maybe yes 💁🏼‍♂️

A professional should always use best tools they can afford. You should understand the tools to the best of your ability.

A laptop is a tool.

If you manage to build a prototype on your work laptop for your side project. The company then owns your new startup code basically.

Plus, you brain will be more relaxed because you're drawing the work and leisure boundary with laptops. I can't imagine opening a laptop and seeing the teams symbol on a weekend. Too much ptsd from the ringtone

I sold my personal laptop a few months back. Got fired recently. I have no laptop even for attending job interviews.

Guys, don't use office laptops for personal purposes. Trust me, it's a nightmare for IT and cybersecurity folks. Bullshit attachment downloads, data exports, and irrelevant site visits cause a lot of alerts on our end.

Definitely you should invest without any thought the earlier you do the better it is
