Interviews Are So Fake

Currently I'm just wondering why interviews feels so fake especially the behavioural ones, which I actually struggle with.

I think it's just a game where candidates say what the interviewer wants to hear instead of trying to know the real character of the candidate. Compared to coffee chats, I think you can actually know about a person more than when you actually do interviews. Any thoughts here?

In personal life, and at work, you will have situations where you have to provide instantaneous answers with feigned passion to trite, mundane, and sometimes borderline idiotic questions. Your employer wants to know if you are capable of marching as a dutiful soldier thru the corporate charade.

@Jackietrader Exactly. Zoomer brains are so addled by 10 second video clips, online communication and standardized tests that apparently they can’t comprehend that others don’t want to work with an autistic doofus. I’ll give up a few IQ points in an applicant, especially in non-tech focused setting, as long as they’re thoughtful, eloquent, put together and generally pleasant to be around. This is what is gleaned in a behavioural, which OP seemingly can’t figure out.

@ShallowSpawn As you grow up you'll realise almost everything is fake. The economy being strong. The government being competent. The generally agreed upon science of healthcare. How much people seem to have things together. It's all to a degree just guesswork and faking it till you make it. Godspeed.

Everything about working in a job is fake. No one is interested or bothered to know the “real you” thats not why these interviews are conducted. They wanna test you to see if you will be a good employee and not create unnecessary issues whether that is related to work, culture, small-talk, colleagues, etc. One advice: always keep your conversations- whether work related or small talk - diplomatic and inoffensive. It’s funny to see how many people I interact with everyday who just keep yapping about alcohol, partying, putting down another gender in jokes, swear words - trying to act cool. Maintain a separation between your personal and professional life always!

It's just like a first date, it ain't that deep bro. It's life. Just put your best foot forward and remember that HR are mostly trying to be debt investors in the early stages - they're trying to avoid losers not pick winners - so don't stress about it too much.

I got similar questions and never took up the job even though they made an offer. I felt it was offensive when they asked me who will take care of your daughter who is 4 years old when both are working. I told them she is in daycare and we manage the time accordingly. The questions were more.personal than professional.

All the interviews I take- it is very clear that I make a decision in the first 10 mins. Our confirmation bias is extremely strong

The behavioural interviews makes sense if the company has actually made an effort to identify and recognise competencies in day to day work.

Unfortunately, this is far from reality as imparting this kind of knowledge would require huge efforts from the entire org.

Hence - behavioural interviews most of the time remain a tick box exercise.

However, I have seen those matter and work beautifully in leadership roles where hiring is more nuanced.
