"Okay… He will be expecting a 4 this year. He did great work. But if I give him that, he'll ask for a promotion And if I promote him, I lose budget Also I have to then deal with his questions on team, title, % raise, roadmap And if I don't promote someone else, they'll get pissed. 5 is highest. Can't give 5. 1 means performance warning. Can't lose this guy. Can't give 1. If I give him a 3.75, he'll know it's political If I give him a 3.5, he'll stay confused - and motivated So let's make it a 3.25 - Looks real, generous and that some thought went into it Sounds encouraging Doesn't cost me anything Keeps him hopeful but not entitled I will also add some vague feedback on - You can do so much more, I see your potential. etc. I will also celebrate the system. Wrap it up in "transparency", "fairness" and "meritocracy" I am such a ...Genius"

These kinds of excuses often arise when a manager plays favoritism, especially when there are team members who can clearly outperform the favored ones.
In appraisals, a manager’s job is actually quite straightforward: give the highest rating and appraisal to the best performer. When this is done fairly, team members rarely raise objections because everyone knows who truly deserves what.
Not because sometimes the bad performers dont treat themselves as bad performer rather say they are not given task because they are not favorite
This doesn't happen you know it, even without favouritism, because a manager cares about him in the first place! Favoured guys are secondary as well here! I infact have experienced it is more like what the author says here, almost with most managers expect the inexperienced ones
My Idiotic manager gives only high ratings to his favourites and doesn't care who has worked hard or not..
If you know that's how it works, then shouldn't your focus be on buddying up with your manager instead of doing actual work. End of the day we all are looking for money and growth, if that's how you get it then you should do it. If it goes against what you stand for, then no one can help you.

That was only review , i am software engineer and all i did was ask ETA to that coworker in USA.

My manager has his favourite employees and they always get higher ratings, bonuses and other perks while no matter what others do its not enough for him. He would give shitty ratings and always have an excuse ready. Since last 2.5 years its, "market not doing good, we are trying our best; having a job jn this market is good enough" and some other bullshit.
Hahaha same Ditto mine was saying, is he doing moonlight in tcs and hcl!!! Lol ye madarchod companies apna profit karodo me kamati he lekin market sirf hamare liye hi kharab hota he.. none of this making any losses still our salary gets affected.
