India Braces for Intense Heatwave Season

• As summer intensifies, temperatures are soaring across India, prompting the Centre to urge states to review their preparedness for heat-related illnesses and heatstroke cases.
• Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized the importance of ‘heat-health’ action plans and ensuring adequate drinking water and functional cooling appliances in health facilities.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts nearly double the number of heatwave days across Northwest India this season, with Delhi among the hottest cities.
• States like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are also experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
• Srivastava urged states to implement Heat-Health action plans, ensure the availability of essential supplies, and disseminate daily heat alerts to all health facilities.
