You should have replied : The icon of JAVA is a cup of hot tea / coffee. Since it is inanimate object, gender cannot be assigned. However if a gender has to be assigned, it should be female since in Hindi we would say “coffee thandi ho gyi hai” indicating feminine characteristics. 🙂🙂🙂
