Talk to your boss’s boss and showcase to him that you are ready to move up the ladder and take up some responsibilities which your boss was handling - this is the best situation you can be in, make the most of it

A thumb rule, always be in touch with your boss's boss, no matter where you are in ladder.
Plus be in touch with other departments bosses also, it helps.
they should be aware of your work and capabilities.
