Improvements as a backend developer

I'm working as a fullstack developer ( 3 yoe). But I worked in a shitty company for one year after college, so don't count that.

I want to improve as a backend developer.

What are some metrics to consider?

How do you keep track of your progress?

I'm learning new concepts and all but when I try to apply I'm stuck. What are the characteristics of an above average software developer?

I don't want to remain mediocre in this area. This is something I want to say that I'm in the top 5 percentile at least.

Also I want to make significant improvement in the next 6 months.

Please add suggestions from your experiences.

Thanks, Me

Isn't the backend game just around scaling?

You could take any recent problem you solved at work, now imagine modifying it to 1000x users, then 1000000x users etc and see if you'd be able to come up with designs that still meet the SLAs.
