IMP: Dont Undercut & Do research before Salary Negotiation

This post will garter mixed response but had to put it here to remove this from the roots.

TLDR: Folks jumping company please do the basic research of what one gets paid in the organisation you are aiming for and learn the Art of Negotiation.

Please dont undercut with Salary.

Long Version:

  • Had a discussion with a close Recruting HR who told situation aint great for certain domains cause Folks dont believe in themselves, dont even do basic research, nor even bother negotiating. They accept the first offer on the table or even quote a salary that is super below the Org standard salary.

  • Worse issue in my PoV, this HR encountered 2 Folks who even quoted "You pay X amount for the position but they are willing to do the same for X-Y". Thats just messed up under cutting.

Impact:

  • You drop the overall Salary range for the position in an organisation which later influences the market average for that domain.

  • Those in the organisation who end up on the higher end of the new average face the risk of being targeted.

  • Long term its reverbrative effects compound. What I mean by that is if earlier the role was 18 LPA and next promotion gave 20 LPA and the average resets to 16 LPA then the new promotion Increment becomes 18 LPA and so on.

  • Most organisations already under pay as is and for some reason in India everything is Quantity focused. YoE, Number of Years served, Number of Members managed etc. Quality is rarely factored in, so in such an environment undercutting or accepting less actually messes up the environment even more. Folks from WITCHA especially TCS and Infy know this very well. You wont get paid beyond a certain budget cap if your YoE is less than X years even if mentally you are mature enough to be a DM or greater position.

  • Company hopping also becomes harder within the same environment. You reach ceiling caps faster as the new average based on Quantitative factors becomes more normalised.

Counter Arguments:

Only one I can think of:-

People are doing out of desperation: I agree. Times are tough but the issue is from a Long term PoV one ends up doing more harm not just to themselves but to the fellow community in that domain.

In the short term one might be secured but the cost is huge Long term. Inflation is a compounder too. So if one caps his livelihood you basically end up shooting your own knees out. You end up enslaved Long term.

My Suggestion:

  • Believe in your skill set and dont let desperation destroy the rewards you truly deserve.
