I think I took a WFH excuse too far
I need to get this off my chest because the guilt is eating me alive.
Back in October I was burning out hard at my org. I just wanted a week of WFH to sleep and recover but my manager rejects everything.
I panicked and told him my uncle was trying to illegally capture our ancestral land back home and I had to be physically present for local court hearings.
It worked. I got the week.
But then he asked about it when I got back. And I had to invent a plotline. Fast forward 5 months... I now have a fully fleshed out imaginary legal battle going on. I even killed off a fictional grand-aunt to complicate the property division. I literally read up on rural land laws just so my updates sound authentic during our 1:1s.
Ngl I wake up sweating sometimes thinking HR will ask for court summons. I can't back down now. The lie is too big.
What is the most elaborate unhinged lie you guys have told at work to survive? Please tell me I'm not the only psycho here.

Why feel guilty? There is no honor among thieves.
Remember the eternal words of the joker " when the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other"....

Haha fair point. I guess I shouldn't feel too bad, but keeping the lies straight is exhausting. He asks for updates on the case in every 1:1 now.

Switch to another company

Dude this is literally turning out to be a movie plot now, and it's indeed too big, man if u were thinking for role/salary update just consider a job change💀

You should tell him that the property dispute is somehow in your favour and you guys will be doing outside the court settlement. If you want to get more WFH tell him that there might be immediate requirement to be available at home in few days. Keep building around these line and use AI to give you more scenarios. Work can be done tomorrow, this is important :D
I get WFH easily otherwise I would have used the same plot and kept myself on toes what is coming next.

That feeling of guilt? 😬 It totally sticks with you till you are in your current company. Once you've switched jobs, though, it becomes your go-to story for coffee breaks or when you're out with friends! 😂
It's actually a good sign that you're feeling guilty. Only people who recognize their mistakes feel that way. Next time, try to come up with a real reason for working from home 🏠, or you can just say it's for "personal reasons." If your manager needs to know every single detail to approve your time off or WFH request, then maybe you're in the wrong place. 🚩 Just my two cents!
