"I Launched My First Side Project(directlymessage.com) Without Writing a Single Line of Code!"

I just launched my first side project: www.directlymessage.com, a Web app using which you can send Whatsapp to anyone directly without saving their number. It’s a Progressive Web App so it’s you can install it on your phone/desktop too(only 240 KB in size and doesn’t access any device data) The twist? I built it without writing a single line of code in just 3 hours! 🤯All thanks to Chat GPT and Claude. That too using their free version. Like many, I've dabbled with various AI tools, often finding them to be overhyped and underwhelming. After years of scepticism about AI's capabilities and months of watching the ‘Vibe Coding’ scene from the sidelines, I decided to take the plunge and do the experiment: Could AI actually help me build a real, functional app? I happened to be the perfect candidate for the experiment: Someone who hardly knows how to code. The last time I wrote a line of code was almost 10 years back in my first year of college. The Goal: Try to create a simple web app to establish proof of concept before trying to build something more complex using AI. The Results: Zero code written Fully functional website. The Learnings The clearer and more detailed your instructions, the better the AI-generated output. Vague prompts lead to inaccurate or incomplete results. When fixing errors in AI-generated code, focus on a single issue per prompt. Asking AI to fix multiple bugs at once often results in broken or inconsistent code. Instead of giving broad instructions, break down tasks into atomic units. AI performs best when given highly structured, step-by-step guidance. AI tools work exceptionally well for building low-complexity projects from scratch but struggle with intricate or large-scale applications. If one AI model fails to solve an issue, copy the latest version of your code and try prompting another tool. Different AI models excel in different areas, so switching tools can often lead to better results. Next challenge: Can AI guide me with SEO to help scale monthly visitors to 15k per month on a regular basis?! Have put up the ads to meet the server and domain name costs. My estimate is this is going to make me 100 dollars at best over the next 1 year. Will donate the extra amount to charity!

Surprised to see so many people not know that you CAN message on WhatsApp without saving the number. Just send the number to any chat (yourself for example), click on it and you'll get the option to message the number. If it's not on WhatsApp, the option to message won't be available

Still one extra step right? You hit enter, then you tap on the number and then you get a popup message which says “send message”, and you need to tap that, and then you need to type your message. But if you try this website, you just type message, hit send, it asks to open the whatsapp, and then if you click yes, it directly takes you to that number with your written message copied.

So it still solves an issue.

P.S.- Now, recently, better than your told way, a much easier way has come in whatsApp. Just type the number in search box on top, it gives option to chat.

Pretty useful. I had some legal work last week and I had to save some 4 different numbers to send docs for print at different shops.

Spread word among print shop owners about this, this will give you ton of visits.

I think in iOS app, you don’t need to save number now. The feature came in WhatsApp recently, may be just 2-3 weeks back. Just paste the number in top search box, you will get the chat button there, hit chat and you will get into that number’s window without that number saved.

What you used for deployment? How many iterations? Prompt on GPT and code on Claude?

I just uploaded the html, manifest and service worker file to hostinger.
Initial prompt and code on Claude. Then moved to chat gpt as claude free credits got exhausted! It took me somewhere between 11-12 iterations to get to the present product.

Nice!! Even though nothing revolutionary, but certainly a great achievement keeping in mind it was created without much coding. That said, it needs ample promotion to make people use it by bookmarking for later. I mean saving number before sending any message is indeed a headache, an unnecessary extra step, which I wonder why has whatsApp put that, but not sure if people will use this site frequently even if they hear about it.

That said, great work, nice POC that AI can help a big way!

Thanks for the feedback man! It's revolutionary for a code illiterate like me though😂 For Android, you must have gotten a PWA install prompt. For iPhone you need to manually add it to homescreen!

Based on what lazy_coder said, can you integrate a qr scan feature that stores the number of the print shop owner and upon scan, it just pops that number of your watsapp.

Sorry if the idea sounds BS, complete coding noob here.

Type "wa.me/+91<Enter number here>", in your browser and you can send messages without saving

I always used to do this but from now on will follow sending the number to my own chat and tap to chat with that number.
