I think number of stocks are too much
I’m in stock market from last 5 years
And I’ll suggest you only invest in good long terms stocks keep few stocks but good amount in them also there’s opportunity cost involved

20% profit in 3 years? I believe it’s underperforming. Rather than stocks, it was better if you would have taken MF. Having said that, I believe market in long term is bullish so hold all of your stocks tightly and put more money in MF

Btw the mutual fund returns is also around 22% only in same span for me

Same time horizon: at 80% profit level of my portfolio. Managing my wife's portfolio since 2 years and her portfolio is at 200%.

How many stocks are there in portfolio? And do you keep selling and buying or just keep buying on dips

GigglyPancake

I have about 45-48 in my portfolio. I don't sell, I buy on the basis of Value Investing for long term and buy on dips as well since the shares I choose are already in discounted valuation. During the bull run about 2 months ago, my portfolio rose to about 126-130% and 80% is the lowest it has slumped to.

It's always a good idea to assess your portfolio in terms of CAGR as against absolute returns.
A 20% absolute return in 3 years suggests a CAGR of ~6%, which is about the same as inflation/FD returns and lower than average long term index and mutual fund returns of 12%-15%, let alone an easy 20%+ returns if you invest in stocks directly using basic investing/swing trading techniques from the internet.
It's important to have an investment plan or trading plan that suits you and that you can follow consistently and you will definitely see your CAGR beat the index in the long term. Combining equity fundamentals and financials with technical analysis has worked well for me in generating 25%-45% CAGR (currently 27%) since 2021.

P.S: If you do plan to be in the market for a long term, start journaling your trades and tracking your portfolio level XIRR in Google sheets/excel. If there’s one thing I see most investors fail at consistently then that’s their lack of documentation. Since 2021, I know my portfolio CAGR and networth on an every day basis and that helps me evaluate how my financials are progressing against goals and benchmarks like index returns, etc.

Keep investing. Its a long journey. Atleast 10 years you need to keep going to start compounding. I have been investing since 10 years & now manage a 8 digit portfolio.

So do you suggest it’s normal for it to have this much returns as of now and I should not take out investments as other suggests ( reduce from 39 stocks to 15 )

Pick any flexi cap fund returns and compare against that, you will know if stocks/MFs is best way for you.

DerpyWaffle
DerpyWaffle

Flexi cap mutual funds are giving around 23% returns whereas my portfolio is at 20%

I am having a similar graph. Not very high returns. But booking profits/loss every year for tax loss harvesting.

DerpyWaffle
DerpyWaffle

what does that mean? If you don’t sell anything there is no tax to pay right ( atleast in my case )

Your portfolio is a bit underperformed if compared with index, please have a look at allocation ratio of large, mid and small cap. Also, it is better to have diversified index ETF in portfolio like niftybees, Nasdaq 100 etf, momentum etf..

SnoozyWaffle
SnoozyWaffle

too many stocks

It is a bit below average, but I am not doing good myself, so I am no one to preach😄 P.S. If your brokerage app provides portfolio level xirr, look at that. I think zerodha has started showing portfolio level xirr too.
