How to switch into PM

Hey folks— I’m a year into my career as a Management Trainee at a solid company. Did 8 months of strategy, currently in sales (tech B2B). It’s going well—I’m a high performer and tend to pick up things fast. A lot of people want me to stick with sales.

But honestly, it doesn’t excite me. What does excite me are social apps—stuff like Instagram or District. I keep thinking about user behavior, why things work, and where the next shift is going to be. Product feels like the right path.

I’ve done my undergrad in Economics + Stats, and an MBA(integrated course 5yrs from a tier1). But I’ve never shipped a product or worked in a product team, so I’m confused where to start. The uncertainty of how long it’ll take to learn, pivot, and land a role—or build something worth it—keeps holding me back.

Have any of you made this switch early in your career? How did you start? And how did you deal with the fear of leaving a ‘safe’ but unexciting path? Would love to hear your thoughts.
