How to Navigate Early Career in Data Science from a Service-Based Company?
I recently completed my Master's from a tier-1 institute in India and joined a service-based company as a Data Scientist. While my role is genuinely DS-focused (not just in name) and the client industry is niche but customer-facing, I’m concerned about long-term growth.
Does starting in a service-based company put me at a disadvantage compared to product firms or analytics-heavy startups?
How can I position myself for a strong switch later? (e.g., skills, networking, certifications)
Industry niche: The domain is interesting but specialized—should I lean into it or focus on broader DS applicability?
Background: I love problem-solving (won multiple hackathons) and didn’t just pursue DS for the pay. Campus placements were rough (got this off-campus), but the pay is decent and market-aligned.
Seeking advice from experienced DS professionals: How do I build momentum from here to transition into a top firm later? What pitfalls should I avoid?

DS is not just DS anymore, you'll need to know DevOps, Viz, Stats, Cloud. It will take some time to understand the architecture behind it.
Service based - Less ownership, gradual learning curve Product based - High ownership, steep curve
Now that you have joined the service based company, try to hold for 2 years and then switch to product based. Mint as much as money you want by switching every year from there and then settle again back to service based when you have hit that saturation point.

Does service based tag depreciate my value in market?
