How to make a comeback as SDE 2 in my career?

Total years of experience: 4.5 years

I started working in my career with one of the WITCH companies. There I did almost zero coding work (I personally don't even count it as software developer experience).

Two years later after doing some leetcode I switched to a product based start-up as SDE 1 (Python dev) and later got promoted to SDE 2. The thing is here too I haven't done a lot of work. Like I haven't worked with DB in production in all these years. My work has always been like writing some scripts and libraries for internal usage. Recently I started working with Java and with it too my work has been like creating libraries or fixing some business logic.

Now my concern is with 4.5 years of experience and SDE 2 title I don't feel I have learnt or done anything tangible.

My fear is although my title here is SDE 2 I won't be able to crack a SDE 2 job somewhere else and even if I am able to get past interviews I won't be able to do justice to the role. Like how will I guide a SDE 1 when I haven't done much work myself for e.g. advising them best practices in certain scenarios or some optimization in DB operations.

I have been an average student in college. Every time I think of making a comeback I just get confused like what things to cover and till what depth to go in topics.

With generative AI I may be able to complete my day to day job tasks but somewhere it feels a void.

How to compensate for what I lacked in myself & experiences over the last few years?

I may not become a 10x engineer but I want to be good enough to stay employed and justify a decent salary.

Any advice is welcome. If you or someone you know has been in a similar situation please share how they got out of it?
