How to be present in the moment.

Lately, whatever I am doing , I am not active/present in the moment. I am diverted in some other negative thoughts or dreams and some imagination. It might be because of past stressful events and traumas but then the question is how to be present in the moment and feel it

Hey there,

Know that it’s not rare and actually quite normal for one to react like that to something that has happened in the past. Unlike some people who react to some situation quickly, there are some who deal with pain , hurt and loss in batches . Some days okay then a dip for a few days and that keeps on coming and going in ways.

Regardless, don’t be too tough on yourself. It’s okay if you fail to focus on life and at work. Spend some alone time, spend it on thinking, spend it on processing the trauma, spend it on crying….the only way to get over something is to deal with it for once, otherwise it will keep on coming in waves again and again.

What helps?

  1. I prefer to deal with things in batches. So in between two waves…work acts like a really good distraction for me.

  2. Write things down on a paper, don’t mean journaling everyday but for once write down everything on a paper or google doc or whatever your prefer. It helps in accepting the wrong that has been done quicker which ultimately helps you move on from it.

  3. Cry for once if you have not already (cry about it and speak tonnes about it to a friend if you are comfortable with them). Helps a lot…although you need to be super lucky to have a friend/sibling/SO like that.

Lastly, be easy on yourself please. When the world has been tough to you, you should not be someone who is keeping a lot of expectations from yourself and make it even tougher for you. Be easy on you, be okay with unproductive days, try painting, try solo dates, blah blah …whatever helps.

It’s your own healing journey, let it take its own sweet time.

Take deep breaths whenever you feel like you want to be present. Count the breaths. Do it for 20-30 seconds upto a minute while focusing on the counting. It will help you.

Another thing that helps is standing or sitting in sunlight barefoot, especially in grass.
