How pointless are goals?

Such a good answer.

I said the same to my new manager during my last appraisal. I told him I do my job best so I won't get fired and asked him to get feedback from the client. Told him politely to cut the crap with upskilling, certifications etc. because I don't want to waste my weekends on those and unwilling to spend extra time beyond my work hours.
