How often should remote teams meet physically/IRL?

Our team has been mostly remote (8-9 members) but I do realise the value in offline meetings (formal as well as informal). Haven't done many informal offline meetups yet.

Some members are in a different city/state, so calling them for a trip just to meet informally for a few hours is dicey since budgets are tight. And we don't do "team building exercises" online , I feel that concept is a little forced and unnecessary.

Any suggestions? Thoughts on offline interaction frequency in general? Do's and don'ts?

Start with low frequency (twice a year?) and increase it only as and when the team demands it. This way you can find what works best for your team.

Don't do random team building exercises, they don't work IMO. Have focussed high-priority / decision-making / brainstorming discussions only. You can also have other fun stuff like travelling together and partying for bonding after office hours.

Yeah we barely did once a year because lack of budget plus covid lockdowns. Planning to organise it and fix calendar dates.

You can aim for once every quarter; in the last week.

In my time during Apna, we used to have a annual one week of work from office. Other than that, with our team, we used to take group vacations once a year.

Is remote working still the preferred mode?

In the post Covid era when people are actually back to flooding offices and the highways are back to being jammed 24/7 and the elevator space is being hogged by everyone who has to get off before you, is remote still preferred?
