How many years does it take to get promoted to C3B from C3A. What are the factors that are considered for the promotions?

Don't take promotion to C3B because getting promotion in TCS after C3A is financial, moral and personal loss in TCS.

However as you asked, let me tell you the duration and Factors to get promotion.

Duration - Minimum 4 years and maximum retire time.

Factors - Only 2 Factors. 1. Last 3 performance band should be B or heigher. 2. Nomination by Manager in system (Ultimatix) for your promotion.

However you can increase your salary more than 50% without getting promotion. That is by completing Wings2 in heigher role. I did that and since last 3 years I got 9 times salary hike (average 3 hike every year with high percentage). In 3 Milestones you will have 12 Power plays in Wings 2 and in every Power Play comes with chance to increase salary with good percentage. On top of that you will get better annual hike compared to others as you will be tagged as Hi-Talent in system. There will be high chance that your salary will be higher than C4 in C3A.

In opposite, if you take promotion rather Wings 2, then your have sacrifice 70%-80% of your variable pay. You will be find difficulty to get good project if you are released to bench because of your high band. Work load and expectations will be huge as they will replace C4 with you but give you the package of C3A. Chances of getting C band in Appraisal will be high every year to fit you in Bell Curve. Moreover by promotion you will not see even double digit hike in package.

However if you need honour of higher position to show to your In-Laws, Girl Friend and society, then switch company and get higher position and package.

Most of the people joins TCS just to tag the brand in resume/CV for few years and use that to get good career growth in industry (outside of TCS). Some people feels thay do not have skills to survive in IT industry and TCS provides job security. So they want to retire in TCS without any promotion or with 1 promotionin a decade (10 years). Remember that job security in TCS is a myth (just explore how many employees gets PIP and D Band every year and are asked to leave the company).

Even onsite option is not good in TCS if your current package is higher than 12 LPA and need to move along with your family. Just calculate how much you can save their after sacrificing many things from life and making the relationship more complicated in family and society. However moving onsite to US with only H1B visa may enable you little more savings (compared to other Visa or other countries) as TCS needs to pay H1B visa holder as per US government defined pay structure.
