How is a job supposed to be like?

I’ve never really had a goal in life, average student, did engineering because engineering, prepared for placements because it had the most prospects, so far it had all been like passing exams in school, that I was able to study and clear so I did, after working for a couple of years, its definitely not like that. I am seeing people passionate about what they work on, not just completing stories because they have to.

For some time it was okay but if I am going to do this for atleast 20 more years then it shouldn’t be like this I think. Everyone around me thinks that I don’t need to think about such stuff cause I am doing well at work, but these thoughts keep persisting. Gratefully I don’t have any big financial liabilities currently otherwise I wouldn’t be privileged enough to say this, that also I know.

Would like to know if somebody also had a similar thought spiral and how did they deal with it.

Had? I still have these. There are so many different answers out there to find what you love. But there's no straight way, like -

  1. Some people figure out what they want to do themselves(stumble upon the thing)
  2. Some have to explore a lot to find it out
  3. Some can thrive anywhere
  4. Some need help with the right kind of people to be happy with what they are doing
  5. Some have a specific purpose defined in life and they go about working towards that. They don't necessarily do things because it makes them happy, but do it because it advances them towards their purpose.

Find out who you are, self explore, figure out what you want. There's nothing wrong in trying out different things if you aren't satisfied with what you are doing right now

That’s a good perspective, I think for all your school life you are told the lines you should walk, and for me college was also that, so now when I do have freedom, then I am left clueless, will figure out stuff with time

Most average students are doing job just for the money it brings. If they are rich enough and don’t need money, I guess 80% of the them will start feeling like this. But money brings comfort, takes you places, safeguards future etc, that is a key driving factor. And those who have absolutely zero interest in tech, and in no interest in earning too, they usually shift to Govt jobs.
