How do you become a Product manager?

I'm a .NET developer with about 2 years of experience, and while I enjoy working with technology, I don't see myself writing code long- term. I'm interested in moving into a Product Manager role since it will let me stay in technical side of business(I think). How should someone like me start learning product management, and what's the best way to transition into a PM role? Can my current development experience help, and are there entry- level or associate PM roles suited for this kind of background?
