Hot Take: 'Users don't know what they want' is an excuse for bad research

The sentiment makes sense. Users don't know what solutions they want. What they do know is how to articulate their problems if asked the right questions.

Bad product leaders overuse this statement and discourage user research. If you are an APM / PM-1 and you rarely speak with users when coming up with your roadmap, that is a sign of bad product culture.

Such a stupid take tbh.

Users generally don’t know what they want, it’s our job to figure out what they “need”.

If you had asked travelers 150 years back what they wanted, they would have said faster horse carts. But what they actually needed was a faster way to travel. Users didn’t know a motor car could be made. It was the products job to understand the needs and available engineering to provide a better solution
