History book recommendations

Hi guys, I am looking for recommendations for indian Medieval History and Modern History which must be unbiased. It shouldn’t be influenced by any kingdom. Any suggestions?

Can't call it unbiased for sure

@LightRefund I don't think so because Deepak’s book provides substantial room for thought on both sides. There is no denying the religious motivations of the British mission but is majoritarianism the only viable replacement? Also, European idealism perpetuated for the benefit of their imperial projects, are certain aspects in them not worth emulating?.

To me that sounds not like bias, but putting forward facts. Opinions are upto the reader to make.

Following!

Juvenile question, maybe, but have you studied NCERT Class 11th and 12th textbooks? NCERT history text books in general? They're a plethora of information and it's all unbiased

To be honest, I have no idea why people keep crying that we got taught only Mughal history, the textbooks i studied taught us about Ashoka, Vijaynagar, Chola, Chera, Gupta, Pandyas, etc

Though, I did feel like there was a lack of emphasis on north - east Indian subcontinent

Bro, After class 10th I didn’t get chance to learn history got into engineering and now it’s been 9-10 years I haven’t studied any history book. But back then as a kid I always loved history now when I grew up I am using my money to explore historical places whenever I get chance (Not for taking selfie and making reels). I love to know about history polity, admiration, there currency, culture, tax system, food habits etc.
If you see my post I am politely asking for suggestions it can be NCERT I don’t want to get into political propaganda book is baised or not. However whatever history I studied till 10th I didn’t found about vijaynagar, Shivaji, gupta however I remember studying about ashoka samrat. Also as far as I remember history book was mostly about kingdom but I want to learn beyond them as I mentioned above.
Anyways I will definitely learn 11th, 12th history book thanks for suggestion.

I don't know, I definitely remember reading about them all in school, maybe our school had slightly different books?

I love history too, infact, I feel like I'd love to revisit school history and civics textbooks!

From plassey to partition: dense to read but largely unbiased.
Note: don't read books prescribed for upsc. They do have a left leaning bias.

Why so ? What about NCERT ?

NCERT books content is definitely affected by the parties in power. The addition/deletion of chapters is politically motivated. Not the best source to get an objective understanding

This book doesn't cover entire India but focuses on South India - Lord of Deccan by Anirudh Kanisetti

Works by Jadunath Sarkar. More focused on Mughal timelines and quite dense

For post independence history, you can start with India after Gandhi by R Guha. It is very comprehensive.

I would suggest reading what they read for UPSC prep. Books by

  1. Satish Chandra (medieval)
  2. Bipan Chandra (modern)
  3. A New Look at Modern Indian History From 1707 to the Modern Times- Alka Mehta and B L Grover S
  4. Advanced Study in the History of Medival India by J.L.Mehta

Maybe you won't find my answer appealing, but here goes. Read widely. Meaning, read the detailed accounts of individual theme, era, Dynasty, ideology etc, which will then create an urge to seek the other side and then you will see the magic and problem with history. It is after all the story as seen and partially recorded by individuals with own biases and information asymmetry, and most importantly agenda.

I've started watching UPSC lectures by Dr. Vikas Divyakirti out of curiosity (not an aspirant). UPSC syllabus covers a broad range of subjects.
