Hindi Language Barrier

Actually I am from the south part of India. I recently joined TCS but unfortunately I got allocated with the team having only people from the North part of India. They are intentionally speaking continuously in Hindi at least 50+% of the call timing. (For example if the call is 30 mins they used to talk in Hindi for more than 20 minutes). I informed and requested them politely to use English but they couldn't respond. Since I am new I don't want to make a bad impression in the first project itself by smashing them with my intellectual English. I really don't know why they are doing like this?. Let's see....... !!!..

Being from North India.I've worked with teams from the South as well. And I've had the same issue. I asked nicely; they shifted to English during the meeting but returned to Tamil.... It is natural and you cannot blame them. But you should make it apparent that I am uninformed of the conversation you are having. They do not expect you to be aware of the information. Alternatively, quit the meeting or conversation simply by saying. You cannot offer value to this topic since you do not comprehend it.Just express yourself...

Well said. My friend, From next week onwards I used to strictly mention in the beginning of the meeting that we are here for professionals and express ourselves in a professional language so that everyone can understand.

This happens everywhere, it's not only hindi if there are more people from a particular language speaking side , they will discuss in their own language, at the end of the day The common medium is ENGLISH.

I accept your perspective but, speaking important points and discussion in their regional language is actually the form of racism. You just think they are talking in the entire meeting to make one decision and I am supposed to respond with my client and manager about the discussion. BTW I am the lead here and I can't directly hurt them with the language barriers. Anyways at the end of the meeting my decision matters but as a lead I should support their discussion and opinions but, they are not ready with English.

As a lead you have to push that official meeting to happen in English, personal discussion can happen in any language. As a person from the south I have been working with team members from the north for over a decade. I was through the same phase. But now now I ask the team to stick to it.

@InstructiveSoil Use of word “unfortunately” shows how much welcoming you are in general.
You reap what you sow! If you feel stuck you can always change your project or look for some better opportunity outside TCS where you will never be allocated with people from North part of INDIA. Best of luck!

I would say just ignore it and move on , Everyone face this problem at some point .Any how it's not about people or discrimination or unprofessionallism it's more about comfort .Everyone love to share things in their own language Kannada people will talk in kannad ,Tamil in Tamil ,Bengali in Bengali and so on. So just chill .😁
