This thought came in his mind because sometimes feels like life is not about perfections it about ups and downs. He is having fomo of I'm writing on behalf of him because his gf may find this from his id those experiences. Possible many of you may have faced and tried this before, would love to hear further suggestions on this.

PS: I'm filling in for him as his girl may read his stuffs.

Do not use fancy words and deal with the truth directly. He wants to dump her while keeping her as an insurance if things don't work.

Anyway 9 years of boyfriend girlfriend stuff without growing into a marriage does seem like a scam from both ends.

He should realise he can't expect her to stay if he dates others. If he's willing to take that risk, so be it. But he might regret it later.

It is very rare to find a partner who sticks it out with you over 2-4 years+. He may not be able to find such a partner again for many years or at all.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

It is normal to feel bored with a partner after a while. But then he should discuss with the girl on how to make it interesting again with her instead of without her.

Seems he wants to break up but does not want to due to guilt. The longer he waits to break up the bigger the hurt will be for her. It's already 9+ years which is going to hurt real bad. Don't make it worse for her by prolonging. Like they say... Rip the band aid off. Otherwise, it's a recipe for disaster.
