Help me evaluate these offers and future scope: Microsoft and Netapp (Bengaluru)
Hi everyone,
I’m a backend engineer with 5 years of experience working on Java, distributed systems, and cloud-based architectures. I have two offers and I’m trying to evaluate them from a long-term career growth perspective rather than just immediate compensation.
Offer 1 — Microsoft (L61) Org: Security
- Product: Microsoft Purview
- Base: ₹30 LPA (including PF)
- Stocks: ~$80k
Offer 2 — NetApp MTS3
- Team: ONTAP product team
- Base: ₹38 LPA (including PF)
- Stocks: ~$22k
My Understanding So Far
- Compensation-wise, Microsoft seems stronger overall because of the stock component.
However, I’m more interested in understanding:
- Career Growth Questions
-
From a developer growth perspective, how is the engineering depth and learning in: Microsoft Security (Purview) NetApp ONTAP teams?
-
Type of engineering exposure Will Purview work be more: Cloud-native Distributed systems at hyperscale Data security / compliance platforms? Will ONTAP work be more: Storage systems Filesystems / low-level performance Infra-heavy but less product-facing?
-
Brand & future mobility Does working in Microsoft Security org open more doors later (other big tech, security, cloud infra roles)? Is ONTAP experience too niche, or is storage systems expertise highly valued?
-
Work culture & growth Promotion velocity at: Microsoft L61 → L62/L63 NetApp senior engineer tracks
-
Long-term alignment I want to grow toward: Senior backend / distributed systems roles Possibly staff/architect level in the future Strong system design exposure
Is it better to:
A) Go with Microsoft for brand, security/cloud platform exposure, and stronger long-term signaling OR B) Go with NetApp for higher base pay and potentially deep systems/storage engineering

Option B More salary now is better than future. Stocks rise and fall, MS is on the higher side compared to netapp and is falling.
