Have backlogs but 1 year of experience
I still haven't cleared my college backlogs but I am employed and I have one year experience in Corporate training and development. Will this be a hurdle in my career progression? Or only skills matter?

Yes. Finish it. Why take the risk.
Many companies look at completed degrees as a baseline.

I took a bad decision joining the university.. They are telling to memorize and write as it is in the ppts they give.. I never once did that in life.. I only write in my own words.. the meaning is same.. but they still don't accept it.. in the exams.. :(

Hi there! I feel you, because I have gone through the exact same thing myself. My engineering university failed me in subjects for which I would teach/guide almost my entire batch, just because I would write answers in my words, instead of rote-learning and vomitting the same.
So trust me when I say, CLEAR THE BACKLOGS BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
If you plan to build a life in India, you need your degree certificate, which you won't get without clearing your backlogs. Don't get swayed by the random stories of folks building a career without a degree.
Indian workplace and hiring scenarios are still very heavily skewed towards academic qualifications. There are quite a few MNCs and well established startups that don't require degrees abroad, but in India they have strict requirements for academic qualifications, irrespective of your work experience. It becomes very difficult to progress in the Indian corporate world without a degree.
So please save yourself from the pain, and CLEAR ALL BACKLOGS !
