Google L5 SWE OR L6 application Engineer?
Recently, I was interviewed by Google. At the end of the process, based on my interview feedback, I was asked to choose between the following two options:
Software Engineer L5 Application Engineer L6
YOE 13 years
Please suggest which role I should consider? I don't have much knowledge for the roles and responsibilities of an Application Engineer at Google.
Current Organization: Walmart Role: Staff Software Engineer YOE: 13 Current Salary: 1 Cr #engineering #software #swe

A Software Engineer L5 position would be more advantageous. Always opt for a role that offers a lower title but higher compensation.

Agreed

@OutOfRatRace if you can help
Sure, @DearestEstablishment61 possible to share job id links for both profiles?

Ask the recruiter the team/vertical in google and how the competition range will vary for both.
if you choose L5 and do good work you are more likely to get promoted to L6 in a year or two.
If you choose L6 now you don't need to depend on uncertain future.
if i were you I would go with L6 with more compensation and stocks as compared to L5.
and then in post a year or two will opt for internal team change to a SWE role.
very easy in google to do this.

Iam. Interested. Sahana
No wonder the job market is cooked currently; you got people with 13 yoe joining in as L5s for a role that is usually for 7-10 yoe people (not shaming you or anything, just highlighting the general trend that current job market is tailored for senior engineers
