Gen Z vs Millennial managers and the obsession with loyalty

All the millennial leads at my org act like they have a huge economic upside if the project succeeds. Possibly even getting some massive bonus. Their families prolly never see them because they are always stressed about some client escalation or timesheet issue.

But why should i as a Gen Z junior who barely makes Rs 4 lacs/yr work that many hours? What is my upside? Getting off the bench just to do legacy support work?

We shouldn't let older generations dictate how we live our life. Us and them are not the same. Their cringe show off about killing their weekends to hit billable hours makes me sick Why do they expect us to bleed for a giant service firm? Go touch some grass

As a millennial myself
I really appreciate the way Gen-Z handles the situation. You are in a way course correcting a lot of things for us

Thanks a lot

Can people FFS stop generalising their pov by associating it with a whole generation ? “I as a Gen Z” ? What does you being Gen Z have anything to do with your lack of motivation to work beyond your mandate to grow faster , I’ve seen the same attitude in many people of all generations. And as to why you should do some extra work and go beyond what your mandated - don’t fool yourself that your working for the company, your working for yourself and as such you need to ensure you are improving , and if you wait till someone gives you a shit load of money before you start working hard , you will probably never get offered the money, “dress for the job you want “

Good that there are only 24 hours in a day. Nobody can advise to work 25 hours. Grow faster for what - faster promotion or being dumped on a random day.

Bro I’m Gen Z myself and I have to say this. If you don’t want to put in the work, companies will just spin up AI agents and pay for max tier subscriptions across every LLM out there. Claude Max, ChatGPT code x Pro, Gemini Ultra antigravity , Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, all of it stacked together. That’s still cheaper than a team of 40 or 50 juniors, 1 to 5 senior Engineer can do 60 to 100 people and one senior engineer with that toolkit ships more than all of us combined. That’s literally happening right now. And let’s be real. You cannot compete with tokens and GPUs. Not at a system integrator, not at a GCC, not at an IT services firm, not at an MNC, not even at a startup. AI doesn’t ask for weekends off, doesn’t complain about billable hours, doesn’t need a bench. It just runs. Juniors doing legacy support work are exactly the layer getting automated first. Now zoom out. Over 1.3 crore graduates pass out in India every single year, all chasing an office job. Out of around 400 million Gen Z in this country, only about 1.5 million actually work in software and IT. You’re in the top fraction of a fraction. You have AC, a laptop, a salary, and a designation while crores of our own generation are stuck doing gig work, prepping for govt exams, or sitting unemployed. So yeah, 4 LPA feels low. But you’re not competing with the millennial lead next to you. You’re competing with every fresher who’d kill for your seat, and an AI agent that costs less than your monthly Swiggy bill. The “I won’t bleed for a service firm” energy is fine, but the firm doesn’t need you to bleed anymore. Be grateful, then be useful.

Brilliant comment. That fact about thousands of other Engineers not even getting job, gets completely forgotten. It is a cut throat competition out there. In the current times, having a job itself is a miracle. That too, those at 3-4 LPA salary, well, the lesser said the better. They actually need to work their ass off, if not in office, outside office in personal time for personal tech improvement (ideally both).

If you're getting paid you should be delivering work. I am not telling you to push on weekends or work after hours. Otherwise just leave if you are not capable. No need to rant.
