Future of Employees in 40s

Most of the ppl who are in their 40s are now middle managers or senior managers. But looks like there are no positions left for them in any org. No one wants to hire them . How will they survive? Anyone who is in their 40s but managed to get a few offers recently, can you please tell what is your tech stack ?

There are some positions above Senior Manager also, like Program Manager, Director, VP, Senior VP, CTO etc.

Many people grow into those roles. But yes, the numbers of those roles are more limited, so for many people, Senior Manager becomes a terminal role, and they work in that till retirement.

For these more senior roles, retirement age is more around 55, not in 40s. After 55, yeah, it's hard to find a job in tech, but by that time, people have hopefully done retirement planning & savings, or also they generally have adult children working by that age, who can support them after retirement.

Also, after retirement, many people take up part-time jobs and side-hustles, as independent contractors, college professors, school teachers, tuition services, etc., to continue to support themselves for the remainder of their lives, until their death.

So that's what life looks like for professionals in 40s or older. 🙂

We are slowly moving towards a better market for independent contractors/consultants and building personal brands.
At 40+ years, you should already have over 15 YoE in your domain, so you should be an expert in your field. Take your expertise and build your personal brand, instead of trying to interview in high-level, high-layoff potential management positions.
It’s also hard to get these positions without strong referrals by people in the company.
