Functional analyst to data analyst

Hi all. I am planning to learn power bi, excel and sql and switch from the BA/Functional analyst role to data analyst as I think my role is too project specific and I am not getting the recognition I deserve. Is this the right move? What are the factors to be considered?

Switching from a Functional Analyst to Data Analyst is a smart move if you want broader opportunities and better recognition. Power BI, Excel, and SQL are essential skills for this transition—they’ll help you analyze data, build reports, and make data-driven decisions.

Key factors to consider: Demand: Data analysts are needed across industries (finance, e-commerce, healthcare). Growth: More room for upskilling (Python, ML later). Salary: Often higher than BA roles due to technical demand.
