FinTech PM (86L CTC) 😅
Stuck at current spm level for 3 yrs, in fintech payment role. Good ratings, but no scope for promo, clearly told.
current tc: 86lakhs (55 cash, 30 rsu/yr). no roadmap.
option 1: switch internal teams to data org, and join at next level spm2
option 2: fintech startup offer in hand: 60l fixed + 4l joining bonus + 40l esop. no level up, join as spm.
what to choose?

Just curious. 55 cash is what roughly per month after deduction?

3.1-3.2L after deducting PPF, NPS as well.

total workex 10+yrs, payments 2yrs, data 5yrs. no startup experience.
goal for next 6months: aggressive interviewing. upskill to ai.
i feel many senior position already in fintech startups. so, spm to lpm to director could be a long haul in fintech. but i have not worked in startups, so maybe incorrect observation or macro bias
2 year goal: find a growth ship. could be mnc, or startup.
long term q: bet on fintech? or bet on data? more growth opportunities are likely where? i love doing non-data much more. but data roles are easier to get in short term, given my experience.

@poweruser ,if you could please guide me how to become a product manager? I have 8+ YOE as Data scientist. Thinking of getting into management side. Do you think this is a good idea? Need some guidance. What is the best course to pursue PM and how to make a switch into PM? Could not ping you as I don't have much grapes 😅 Thank you!

can you tell me your motivation to become PM. data science is hot right now. also, lot of PM openings are coming up that require data science background. this is the new breed of ai PMs. getting on this bus should be easy for you, relatively speaking.

That's a good question...I have thought about it for long...
My motivation which I think are reasonable (I might be wrong though) :
- already at 8+ YOE, still in IC role and don't think will become a manager in next 2-3 years!
- I am uncertain, if this pace would push me into middle management in 5 years! Also don't have a MBA degree.
- Becoming a PM would not be like getting into different skillset like devops or front-end and need to start from the beginning, it would be like an "add on" in my resume and woould help me get better role and pay, ofcourse!
- AI PM is what I was thinking of and if I don't get an offer, I can continue to focus on my AI/DS skills. I just thought getting into PM would be a natural shift and not too much effort would be required on my end.
I do hope, I could get a better understanding of PM's their role and responsibilities from you. And guidance from where to pursue the course.

30L RSUs > 40L ESOPs especially if you don't see the company making massive profits in the foreseeable future.
Take with a pinch of salt because I'm a rookie.

My thoughts, stay in your current company - the biggest barrier is to get to a director role . Even if you switch it's very hard to get a director role . I would recommend talk to other teams in the company where there is growth.
