Feeling Stuck After 5+ Years in First Company – Need Honest Advice

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share something that has been on my mind for quite some time and get honest perspectives from this community.

I have spent 5+ years in my first company, working in the same team for most of this duration. While I’ve gained stability and comfort in the environment, the nature of work hasn’t changed significantly over time. Recently, I’ve started feeling stuck and under-challenged.

When I see many of my peers switching companies every couple of years and progressing in their careers, I can’t help but compare myself. It has started affecting my confidence, especially around career growth and market readiness.

One of my biggest concerns is interviews. Over time, I have been more focused on delivering assigned tasks and getting stories completed. I understand requirements, explore solutions online, refer to documentation or online resources when needed, and deliver results. However, I haven’t deeply invested in understanding and strengthening core areas like:

  • Data Structures & Algorithms
  • System Design
  • Strong problem-solving foundations
  • Deep technical understanding of the stack I work on

Because of this, I feel underprepared for interviews and that fear is holding me back from even attempting to switch. The thought of facing technical interviews creates a lot of anxiety.

I genuinely want to grow and move forward, but I’m struggling with:

  • Fear of interviews
  • Self-doubt about my technical depth
  • Comparing myself constantly with peers
  • Feeling “comfortable but stagnant”

Has anyone else experienced something similar after spending many years in their first company?

How did you rebuild confidence and prepare yourself for switching?

Where should someone in this situation realistically start?

Looking forward to honest and constructive advice.

Note: This post has been structured with the help of ChatGPT to better articulate my thoughts.

Start today and work everyday. You'll clear interviews after few months of training. But if you're in 90 day NP company you'll need total confidence in clearing majority of companies, as most need immediate or 1 month joiners. It's a pain in the a$$ after 5 years... You think you're a bit late. But still go ahead it'll be worth it. You're not late, it's the right time. The most imp thing is not to be lazy 🦥.

Hey, thanks for the support. Laziness isn’t the issue—I’m just sorting through the many resources to decide the best place to start.

The reality is that there is no perfect time to feel ready. After 5 years in one spot, the best solution is to simply start preparing and actually giving interviews. Action is the only cure for the anxiety you’re feeling. If you keep procrastinating, you’re just staying in a loop of stress that leads nowhere. It’s a common trap to think you need to master everything before applying, but in the real world, you build interview stamina by actually being in the room.

first few interviews might be rough, and that’s okay. Treat them as practice. It is always better to take imperfect action now than to stay stuck in a comfortable but stagnant position just thinking about it. Break the cycle so start today.

Hi, thanks for the honest advice — it really makes sense. I agree that taking action and starting interviews is the only way to get comfortable with the process. I’m working on overcoming the hesitation and getting back into preparation. If you don’t mind, could you also guide me on how to approach the preparation and what I should focus on first? Your suggestions would really help me get started in the right direction.

Bro, believe me there is no perfect time, just start giving interviews. I also have worked in the same company for 8 years, feeling of 'not yet ready' kept me delaying the job switch. But once I started giving interviews everything changed. Got an offer with 120 percentage hike. Don't further delay, just brush up fundamentals and start giving Interviews.

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve already started applying for a few roles, though I haven’t received updates yet. My main challenge right now is interview anxiety — especially around DSA questions. I studied DSA earlier but didn’t practice competitive coding much, and seeing the current interview trends shared on LinkedIn sometimes increases the fear and holds me back a bit.

Start preparing for interviews, it'll compound.
