Feeling lost in Machine Learning Engineer Field

Guys I am pretty done with my life.

I mean i worked my ass off to get into a good college, failed to get into iit. Studied quantitative economics, failed be dept topper ended up being 4th. Self studied without any guidance ML failed to get a job in top PBC as MLE. Joined a startup but seniors are toxic and I want to leave for himalayas right now.

Honestly I still think I should have continued for a masters in my college since it was a integrated course and master thesis year was supposed to be chill. I cry sometimes what I have got myself into.

More there is very less guidance on how to become an MLE in top pbc. Requirements in maang are either a phd or at best 3 years of experience in entry level postion. Adding to this no clearity of what is expected from an MLE after LLMs came into scene.

I am confused what to study right now. Lot on my plate,LLD HLD DSA ML theory. I am just done with slef learning its always failure I have met.

I cant even ask for help cause I dont know where does the problem right now, too much in my head. Begging for refferals from VPs,part time research projects from Universities. I am doing everything possible but I am failing alot.

I wish no body hit this much of confusion anyday. I must thank myself for fighting until now. The day I feel I am done with BLR, I will take one way flight home and never return back and stay with my parents with income with maybe a saloon or something cause I hope ai wont replace me soon.

First take a deep breath.

Instead of VPs, why not long entry level MLEs and seek their input.

Given your experience level, focus on DSA, crack the interview. Then build on your specialization.

Btw, MLE and data scientists are different. In my opinion MLE is more like plumbing around the models and the integrations. You should take the first steps mentioned above before deciding if you want to be MLE or not.

Yup but even though both roles are not strictly separated, alot of blurry lines after GenAI came into picture. If you take 100 job description each from DS and MLE roles there is a lot of overlap.

Thanks for the advice tho.

You can easily enter a start-up

Kuch samajh nahi aaya, you studied Economics and then entered Software field just based on self study?

Yes, I have seniors and batchmates from our college who cracked gsoc twice and got into uber and google so got good amount of guidance from them. The economics I studied had a lot optimisation and market theory math which helped enourmously understanding ML concepts.
