Feeling guilty about rejecting offer on the last minute

Hi guys,

Recently I got an offer from a MNC, i told them I would join in 20 days. HR was very keen for the joining and the vendor who shared my resume. I got a better offer and I told me I would not join. I extended my joining date from the MNC by saying some personal medical issue which they agreed to. When I told them about not joining, they said it's not good for them as client will esclate the things and make hard for the vendors.

Now I am feeling guilty about hanging them to dry. I don't want to hurt anybody but unwilling I have increased their problem. They were very excited for the joining. They were calling me daily for the pre onbording things.

What to do guys, i am not feeling well, felling guilty. That because of me somebody has gotten into trouble.

What should I do guys. Please suggest, i don't want to be in this guilt. Am I overreacting or this is normal. This is my first switch

I was going through this a few months ago. It's not a good feeling. But the market is employer centric. In this setup, if you have to look after your own interests, you have to be selfish

I was in the exact same situation that you are. I felt guilty af for leaving them with just 3 days left. But then I thought - "Would they be this disappointed when and if they had to lay me off?" . The answer was no.

So don't take it too hard on yourself. They'll find another guy like you in just a few days. We're all replaceable for them.

It's good that you're feeling guilty , that makes you a good human being.

Consider this: for every case like yours, there must be thousands of unfortunate folks whose offer was abruptly put on hold or rescinded by MNCs right before the joining date, or were laid off without warning, or were not released in time to join another company despite being on the bench... I'd be willing to bet that the company wouldn't have felt as guilty then as you are now.

Think of it from this perspective: you're representing the market selecting for higher salaries—too bad that this MNC can't afford you, it means they'll have to allocate a higher budget for this role to get the kind of talent that they want.

Though I will say that your feeling guilty is a good sign, it shows you have a conscience. Don't ever lose it :)

It's their duty to pursue everyone with the same interest. In case, if the employer had revoked the offer, they wouldn't be feeling sorry for you. They would just wash it off and move on to the next candidate and next employer.

Never regret prioritising your own self. No one cares for you except you. It might hurt but everyone have their lives and problems. So don't worry about it and focus on your new job with the same excitement. You didn't do any wrong. This is a survival game and you aced it. Now go back to thinking about yourself.

Best wishes for your new role.

If the company was really interested in you they would have given you a better offer

I was in similar situation 2 and half years back. One of the small scale company extended offer with my 90 days notice period. The manager and HR were really good and friendly. I really wanted to join that company. But CTC was really priority as I come from very almost lower income class family. After 2.5 months, I had to say no to them and it hurt me very much. I still feel the guilt of declining their offer but didn't had any other option to improve myself and family financial condition. FYI, that company was ready to pay almost 80% of the highest CTC that was offered to me till that time.
