Extending holidays beyond approved leaves

I work at Oracle and despite having plenty of leave balance, my manager did not approve more than 18 days. I am from India and am currently vacationing in the US. My manager also lives in the US, so the last week is a holiday for them.

I was supposed to return by December 23rd. Should I inform him that I am extending my leave and return by Jan 2nd, or should I say that I will return by the 29th instead and pretend to stay online on Slack from my mobile since no one will be online anyway?

Be honest about returning on Jan 2nd, but don't be honest about the reason for it.

Make up some reason around Dec 23rd, about some family emergency which is why you can't return by Dec 23rd and say you will try to return as early as possible once the emergency is sorted.

And then, that "as soon as possible" return date happens to become Jan 2nd.

If you tell him about intentionally extending to Jan 2nd, your boss will not be happy about you refusing to listen to his orders. But if you have an emergency that you can't control, then he can't argue with that. 😊

Enjoy your vacation! 👍
