Experienced PMs of Grapevine, need your advice!

Hey guys, this could be a little lengthy post so will cut to the chase. Will really appreciate any advice or inputs. Background - PM with 22 months of exp post MBA, with a fintech, was with a bank earlier. Desperately seeking a switch.

Questions-

  1. Since I’ve been in BFSI now for 22 months, will I be able to move to other consumer product based companies easily or will it be an issue

  2. How is the market right now? I have a fairly decent profile in terms of my college tier, academic achievements along with extra curricular achievements. I have hands on knowledge on many tools which are essential to a PM and have delivered and led multiple high impact projects. I’m still not getting calls

  3. Could this be a factor- I was with an Indian bank prior to this for 13 months and with this fintech for 9 months. However due to personal commitments I need a location change which is why I’m seeking a shift.

  4. What can I do to gain an edge, should I consider something like a CSPO certification? I’ve taken paid services of naukri which is supposed to display my profile to more recruiters but I’m not sure how that will work out for me.

  5. In my company I do largely project management as the business team calls the shots and PMs are just overseeing execution. Is this normal? Nobody cares about the roadmap, last minute Ad-Hoc requests blow away roadmaps which had been agreed upon and discussed and top management drives initiatives without any data backed research, just in a haphazard nonsense way.

CSPO is shit

#5 is common in Indian startups especially for entry level PMs, learn execution. You will learn communication, quantification of impact with time.

Don't do CSPO, or any other certification for that matter. Yes, switching to consumer internet companies is going to be difficult from where you are currently, unless you join a startup in that space.

Banks are usually dead ends for PM work. Try companies where your domain expertise will be valuable + more product focus. Have you tried BharatPe or Neobanking startups? I think there are still companies that want to hire PM with experience with lending.

Joining a startup is always an option. The entry barrier is low, you get loads of learning , you will likely oversee multiple functions at a grassroot level. Smart and speedy execution is key. Strategy is virtually non-existent early stage.

Agreed. I am currently working with a fintech startup only. Learning has been great so far but will moving from a lending fintech be an issue for moving to consumer internet companies too?
