"Eternal" is the worst possible name Zomato could've gone with
Speaks volumes of deepi's ego and that of the team. Lack of imagination too.
Food delivery, quick commerce, events and restaurant fulfillment - none of the 4 verticals have anything to do with being "eternal". They're all ephemeral, momentary and temporary. Nothing wrong with them being so either, but the cognitive dissonance is too high here.
What it portrays is their desire to be eternal as a company, sure. He said as much in his memo. But that's literally what every company aspires to be. Doesn't mean one names their company along those lines too.
Would've been a great name for a health and fitness brand, but they are hardly fitness friendly. In fact their bread and butter comes from making people lazier, unhealthy and addicted over time.
The last few paragraphs of his announcement (image below) make zero sense. Sounds like someone wrote it while tripping on mushrooms or something.
Deepi's success has clearly gone to his head and his marketing department is probably filled with yes men/women who didn't have the nerve to question such stupidity.
Starts the memo with getting listed on sensex (talks about creating immense wealth for everyone except delivery partners?), sprinkles in some faux humility in the middle (people from "ordinary backgrounds" such as IIT IIM can come together and "change the world" lmao. Delivery partners are literally an afterthought in this memo), then goes completely off the rails near the end.
This, after the chief of staff debacle and cover up, along with veg and non veg fleets launch blunder , has really damaged their branding and image in my eyes at least, idk about others.
Complete lack of sensitivity and empathy towards Indian masses and their sensibilities. Fully expecting to see more such blunders from them in the future.
If you're ever reading this by any chance Deepinder, please hire better marketers and actually listen to them.

downfall start hone wala hai
I wouldn't wish it on any earnest entrepreneur. I just hope he realises this and gets better people on board.
I have actually spoken to the zomato team (HR and marketing). The pretentious south delhi/mumbai accents were enough to tell me what kind of people were getting hired.
Let's discuss this on first principles: Since you haven't argued that there wasn't a need to change names, it's a good start. For the uninitiated, the parent company has multiple businesses, and now Blinkit will soon expand to become bigger than Zomato. Hence, there was a need to change the name of the parent company and not let one of the brands outshine the others.
Now coming to what name made sense - Any name makes sense. The fuck do we care what the holding company is named. We interact with the brands, and the are not being branded. Whether is Alphabet or Meta or Eternal - doesn't matter.
He wanted to cook some deep meaning story - You don't buy it? No problem. Fair game to you. It anyways feels half cooked.
To make inferences about the founder and motives from the name of a stupid holding company that you are never going to interact with - Seems far fetched. And in doing so, you have fallen into his trap. You see, Deepi, creates one or the other news item every week. And it's always polarizing. The idea is not to be called a creative genius - The idea is to be relevant, current and in the news. Which he manages to do. And by participating in his shenanigans, you're just adding to it.
Better is to ignore these things.
Being renamed Eternal does not, in any way possible, harm the future prospects of the company (from a financial standpoint). Nor does it dilute Zomato/Blinkit/District/Bistro/Hyperpure... So, ignore.
You make very good points.
Specially: their entire business depends on making people lazier, unhealthy and addicted over time
Zomato Rebrands to Eternal: Mixed Reactions
- Zomato announced its rebranding to 'Eternal Limited,' sparking mixed reactions on social media.
- CEO Deepinder Goyal confirmed the change, with the corporate website and stock ticker updating accordingly.
- Users had varied responses,...
Some sense prevailing finally.
It's a decent win. And, the best thing about startups is they listen and are real quick!
(Goyal did lose the plot though when he had to endlessly keep explaining in his thread yesterday when things started snowballing)

The factory which got Green Jersey orders 😭😭😭😭

The discrimination on green vs red jerseys makes a lot of sense. Don't want people to judge what you're ordering basi...
