Esop Liquidity is becoming lottery??

After reading this article, it seems like early players who have become big had the fortune of liquidity. What do you think about more recent startups in last 5yrs or so?

ESOPs have always been a lottery. Unless the startup makes it big and IPOs, it's almost useless. Even if it's a buyback proge, you will barely get anything unless you are one of the very first/senior most employees.

Companies are not mad to buy back esops, especially when their sole objective is to show as much as positive balance as possible.

With the one or two exceptions, all others make use of the good to hear stories to show more compensation with the help of esops.
